Letter to the editor: Events scheduled to protest authoritative actions

Memorial Day this year seems particularly poignant: the values for which generations of American soldiers gave their lives are being attacked from within. Bedrock principles of democracy, including the right to due process for all people within our borders and the right to criticize the government, are challenged. Here in Vermont we’ve seen legal green card holders seized by ICE, and nationally a judge and a U.S. Representative, political opponents of the Administration, are arrested while fulfilling their constitutional duties. There have been countless Executive Actions that flaunt existing law. This speaks of anti-democratic authoritarianism.

What can we do? Make our democratic values known. On June 14 No Kings protests will be held across the country. We invite you to stand up for democracy by attending a No Kings protest in Vergennes, noon-2 p.m., on the village green. You can find other Addison County events at www.mobilize.us/nokings/, and there is an all-day event in Burlington.
