Clippings: Words better on pages or screens?
On a recent day off, I was reading the excellent book on copyediting called “Dreyer’s English,” when the expert wordsmith mentions that a character can be quoted as having “susurrated.” (p119). I didn’t know what the word means (turns out it means something has a “whispering quality”), so, being of a certain age, I reached over to my Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary.
