Letter to the editor: Many in government not telling the truth about taxes

Well, the elections are over, and we are getting President Trump back. All we hear on the news is how much of a liar he is. Well, don’t throw rocks at glass houses. Let’s take a look at the people in Montpelier, from the governor down to the Legislature.

To a lot of people like me, they (the folks in Montpelier) lie a lot. They said that our taxes were going up 14%. Well, mine and a lot of other people I know in Lincoln went up over 100%-plus. After my rebate from the state, mine still went up over 100%. There are a lot of retirees on fixed incomes that can’t afford it. Where are we going to live? Under the bridge with other people!

Since when did the state of Vermont start controlling our property? (That is, the property taxes being sent to the state to fund schools.) It seems us property owners are funding some of the state’s bills. So, what are their (legislators’) jobs besides raising taxes?!

They all run for office saying more money for education. How much do we need? Where is it all going?

Also, on the news it said that state employees got raises, the retirees got raises and the General Fund spending was raised. Well, that’s nice. I hope it’s more than the $10 to $15 additional that I get about every month through Social Security.

Some neighboring towns’ property taxes didn’t go up much, others not at all, but I live In Lincoln and our taxes did. Why was there such an increase? It is because we have our own school. We belong to no district. When I was growing up, my mother and father owned a lot of land in Milton; they paid their taxes to the town, not the state of Vermont.
