Learn about ‘green burial’ in Lincoln
LINCOLN — The public is invited to learn more about “green burial” at an informational event on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 4 p.m. at the Lincoln Library.
Organizers are promoting this as a unique opportunity for learning, growth and discussion around green burial in our state and in our community.
Green burial, sometimes called “natural burial,” is a way of minimizing the environmental impact of burying the dearly departed and hastening the decomposition of their bodies in the soil.
Jim Hogle, president of the Vermont Forest Cemetery (VFC), will be at the Lincoln meeting to answer questions and support conversation around the wide range of topics death and burial presents, from the spiritual, to the logistics, to the science, to the legalities. VFC is a green burial ground just on the other side of the mountain in Roxbury that has been navigating what modern green burial looks like and its evolution into the future.
One of the first burials held at VFC is the subject of a 20-minute documentary film titled, “From Earth to Earth.” Part of the Jan. 18 event will be screening the film as an opportunity to answer some questions, generate thought and discussion, and to provide a visual of the green burial process. The film can be viewed online at tinyurl.com/VFCgreenburial.
Part of the intention of this event is to think about what the establishment of a green burial ground in Lincoln could look like. Part of this will be Metta Earth providing information regarding the establishment of a burial ground that would be open to the public.
Light refreshments will be provided.
