Lucile Shiverette, 90, of Middlebury
MIDDLEBURY — Lucile Shiverette, Starksboro native and Middlebury resident, died on Jan. 2, 2025. She was 90.
She was born on March 5, 1934, in Starksboro, to Harold and Emma Shiverette. She grew up on the family farm with her parents, brother Robert, and many foster siblings over the years. Some of the family’s land is now home to the Starksboro Elementary School.
She graduated from Bristol High School in 1953. Except for a few years when she worked as a mother’s helper for a Vermont family in Florida, she lived on the family farm with her brother before moving to The Commons in Middlebury after retirement and after her brother moved there, as well.
Lucile worked for many years as a cook at the Converse Home in Burlington and prided herself on making delicious home-cooked meals for large groups.
She proudly displayed a plaque from the Town of Starksboro thanking her and her brother for land they donated to the town in memory of their parents.
In her later years, Lucile had many friends at Project Independence in Middlebury and at the The Commons. She recently moved to Shard Villa in Salisbury, where she found a comfortable and welcoming home. Though she was visually impaired and suffered from significant hearing loss, she would always end a small complaint with, “oh well, that’s all right.”
Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Shard Villa, Elderly Services, and Addison County Home Health. Lucile had an enormous network of support from these organizations in addition to her supportive network of friends. Lucille loved you all.
She was predeceased by her brother, Robert. Neither she nor Robert married.
A graveside service will be held in the spring. ◊
