Commodores are the only girls’ hoop winners
ADDISON COUNTY — Vergennes was the only winner late last week among local high school girls’ basketball teams, as both Mount Abraham and Otter Valley lost their second-round games in Fair Haven’s annual holiday tournament, and OV also lost another home outing.
Games scheduled for Dec. 30 — Middlebury at Harwood and Mount Abe at Montpelier — were scheduled to be played after the early holiday deadline for this edition, and details will be reported in next week’s paper.
FAIR HAVEN TOURNAMENT
On Dec. 23, host Fair Haven won its annual Mary Canfield Holiday Tournament at the Eagles’ expense, 61-32. Kate Hadwen led the Slaters with 18 points and was named the tournament MVP. Isabelle Cole added 14 points and joined Hadwen on the All-Tournament Team.
Louisa Painter and Gen Forand each scored eight points to lead Mount Abe vs. the Slaters, and teammate Abba Parker made the All-Tournament team.
In that Monday’s other tournament game, Burr & Burton eased past OV, 50-36, as Bulldog Maeven Virgilio tossed in 19 points. Virgilio made the All-Tournament Team.
Breanna Bovey paced OV with nine points, and Miley Lape and Tegan Boynton chipped in eight apiece. Matelin LaPorte, who had a big game vs. Fair Haven in the first round the week before, made the All-Tournament Team.
VUHS
This past Saturday, the Commodores outlasted host Williamstown, 41-38. Ashtin Stearns led VUHS with 17 points, and Ava Francis scored seven. Amelia Giroux and Georgia Krause did good work on the boards with nine rebounds each as the Commodores improved to 3-1.
OTTERS
On Saturday, visiting Fair Haven (3-1) took a 14-0 first-quarter lead on the way to a 58-23 victory.
Cole paced the Slaters with 11 points, and Victoria Kelly scored 10
The Otters dropped to 1-3 heading into a Saturday home game vs. the Tigers.
