Boys’ basketball teams all win
ADDISON COUNTY — All four local high school basketball teams swept their games played between Dec. 23 and 28.
Games scheduled on this Monday, Dec. 30, were played after the early holiday deadline for this issue of the Independent.
TIGERS
On Dec. 23, Middlebury earned its first win, a 76-60 home result over U-32. The Raiders held a four-point halftime lead, but the Tigers erupted to outscore them in the second half, 45-24. Cooke Riney tossed in 26 points to spark MUHS, and Tassilo Luksch added 13 on a night in which many Tigers put up points on the scoreboard.
Carlo Concessi (11 points) and Keegan Rossi (10) reached double figures for U-32.
On Dec. 28, the visiting Tigers navigated Mill River, 58-32. Riney (17 points, four rebounds), Kyle Stearns (15 points, five rebounds), Luksch (five assists), and Taylor Altemose, Keenan Chicoine and Brady Lloyd (seven points apiece) were among the many contributors as the Tigers evened their record at 2-2. Beckett Burke led Mill River (1-4) with 12 points.
COMMODORES
On Dec. 23, Vergennes Union High School used strong defense and balanced scoring to knock off visiting Fair Haven, 49-39. Ryan Wright led the Commodores with 13 points, Reese Paquette and Ryker Mosehauer each scored 12 points, and Spencer Gebo contributed eight points and nine rebounds.
Slater forward Phil Bean led all scorers with 16 points.
On Dec. 27, the Commodores scored a season high in points in defeating visiting Williamstown, 79-62. They also evened their record at 2-2. Mosehauer led four Commodores in double figures with 19 points, adding five rebounds. Cohen Howell scored 17 points and also grabbed five boards, Wright scored 15 points, and Quinn LeBeau added 11 points.
Evan Bailey (23 points) and Nick Mascitti (14) led Williamstown.
The Commodores were set to visit Twinfield on Monday.
EAGLES
On Dec. 27, the Eagles broke into the win column by defeating visiting Mount St. Joseph, 43-33. The Eagles took a 17-7 first-quarter lead, but the Mounties pulled to within 21-17 at the half. Eight points from Eagle guard Hayden Lutz in the third quarter helped restore order, and the lead was back to 10 entering the fourth quarter
Lutz finished with 13 points to lead Mount Abe. Charlie Germon added 10, and Jacob Prouty chipped in eight.
Gavin Treanor led all scorers with 19 for MSJ.
The Eagles were scheduled to visit Mt. Anthony on Monday.
OTTERS
On Dec. 27, the Otters improved to 4-1 by knocking off Division I host Mount Anthony, 68-58. OV led wire-to-wire, including by 35-31 at the half, and iced the win by hitting 16 of 20 fourth-quarter free throws, six by Logan Denis.
Four Otters reached double figures: Drew Pelkey, with 16 points; Connor Denis, with 15; Brody Lathrop (13) and Lucas Politano (11).
Dreland Carey led the Patriots with 16 points.
