Letter to the editor: Silberman merits return as high bailiff

In July of 2023, I had the opportunity to meet Dave Silberman, the elected high bailiff of Addison County. We had a pleasant, extended conversation over coffee.

I learned that the Office of High Bailiff is unique to the Green Mountain State. Vermont is the only one of the fifty states that has such a position. As our high bailiff, Mr. Silberman, I further learned, has no physical office, no salary, and no regular duties or responsibilities. However, that’s not to say that the office is unimportant. According to the online Vermont Voter Guide published by the Secretary of State, “Vermont elects a high bailiff who steps in to assume the responsibilities of the county sheriff if the sheriff cannot perform their duties. While the position is limited, it is essential for maintaining continuity in law enforcement at the county level.”

Mr. Silberman also explained to me on that summer morning his understanding of civilian oversight of the position of sheriff. His explanation resonated with me, a former law enforcement administrator.

I’ll cast my vote to reelect Dave Silberman as Addison County’s high bailiff. I urge my friends and neighbors to do the same.
