ELISABETH ULLA-MARTA AULEN HOLM

MIDDLEBURY — Elisabeth Ulla-Marta Aulen Holm, age 83, passed away peacefully on Sept. 9, 2024, with her loving son Erik by her side. She was born on July 27, 1941, in Stockholm, Sweden.

Elisabeth received her bachelor’s degree from Augustana College and later a master’s degree in Comparative Literature from the University of Iowa. She was a proud and active member of the Addison County community for over 50 years. She dedicated her time and talents to numerous causes that were close to her heart, such as the Elderly Services Organization and Homeward Bound. Elisabeth was also extremely passionate about the arts and played a key role in the Town Hall Theater. She was recognized for her exceptional contributions, particularly through her active involvement in fundraising efforts for the renovation and reconstruction of the theater.

Elisabeth had a deep love for adventure and travel, often returning to her native country, Sweden. She found joy in reading murder mysteries, collecting antiques, and cultivating her beautiful flower gardens. Her colorful blooms, particularly her tulip gardens, were a local treasure in Cornwall, admired by many for their meticulous care. Elisabeth’s vibrant sense of style shone through her love for bold colors and elegant antiques, adding warmth and charm to everything she embraced.

A passionate advocate for animal welfare, Elisabeth supported the Humane Society and rescued countless animals over the years as well as fundraised for their care. Elisabeth was a devoted pet parent to an army of small dogs who brought her much joy throughout her life. Her love for animals was one of the many charming things about Elisabeth.

Although Swedish was her first language, Elisabeth mastered English to a level that often surpassed and surprised native speakers. Her love of literature sparked countless conversations filled with wit, humor, and clever one-liners, and with her eloquence, depth, and profound knowledge, Elisabeth was never at a loss for words, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of engaging with her.

Elisabeth was a gifted chef and was famous for her Swedish pancakes, cheesy mashed potatoes, and “Granny Sauce,” all beloved family favorites that remain a staple in the homes of her loved ones. Her gingerbread cookies and home-cooked meals were legendary, and treasured by both family and friends.

Elisabeth was predeceased by her husband, Peter in 2009 and her sister Kerstin Margareta Aulen Landegren in 1991. She is survived by her sons, Anders and Erik Holm, her sister Ingegerd Gertrud Aulen Frederiksen, and her beloved grandchildren, Sara and Jakob, who affectionately called her “Granny.” Elisabeth will be deeply missed for her warmth, generosity, and love of life; and remembered as a cherished and dear friend to many.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to Addison County Home Health and Hospice.

Arrangements under the direction of Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home. Online condolences at www.sandersonfuneralservice.com. ◊
