Nancy C. Mandigo, 88, of Middlebury
MIDDLEBURY — Nancy C. Mandigo peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on July 25, 2024, in Middlebury, Vt. Nancy, age 88, was born in Providence, R.I., to Velma (née Atwood) and Sanford LaVoy Sr. Nancy graduated from Burrillville High School in 1954, where she met Bill Mandigo, her husband of almost 59 years. Together Nancy and Bill raised their boys, Billy, Jeff, Glenn and Doug.
Always a hard worker, Nancy held jobs throughout her life, from her first position as an office manager to her last, and favorite, in the Scituate High School cafeteria. While raising her boys, Nancy often worked third shift so she could be home in time to see them off to school. Nancy (and Bill, of course) were proud their hard work allowed them to send all four boys to college.
Hill Road was a welcoming place for family, friends, and guests. Nancy’s fridge and cupboards were always full, and most notably the freezer was stocked with everyone’s favorite flavor of ice cream. She was famous for her apple and pecan pies, and her baking continued when she moved to Vermont, where her grandchildren became especially fond of her coffee cake.
Nancy adored her eleven grandchildren and they brought great joy to her life. Even when her memory began to fade, Nancy always remembered her grandchildren, whose visits and phone calls would light up her face.
Nancy was a loving and loyal friend to Carol Hauser and Bea Bailey and her sister, Judy Perry. She loved talking on the phone with her friends and would also meet them to go shopping and bicycle riding.
Nancy and Bill moved to Middlebury, Vt., from Rhode Island in 2017 to be closer to family. When she was no longer able to live alone, Nancy moved to Shard Villa Residential Care Home and most recently resided in the Helen Porter Rehab and Nursing Memory Care Unit.
Nancy will be remembered by her family and friends for her love, generosity, and strength. Nancy was predeceased by her husband, Bill. Nancy leaves behind her family, Billy and Jane Mandigo, Jeff Mandigo, Glenn and Terri Mandigo, and Doug and Megan Mandigo, as well as eleven grandchildren and a beloved niece, Rebecca Perry. She is also survived by her sisters Barbara, Cynthia, and Sandy. Nancy was predeceased by her parents, Velma and Sanford; her sisters Judy, Marcia and Tana; and her brother Butch.
Nancy enjoyed her time at both Shard Villa and the Memory Care Unit, becoming friendly with the staff who cared for her. In particular, she enjoyed participating in the activities at the Memory Care Unit, and despite never wanting to play cards with Bill and her grandchildren at the table (though she loved listening to them), she became quite the avid Bingo player. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to either organization. The addresses are as follows: Shard Villa Residential Care Home, 1177 Shard Villa Road, Salisbury, VT, 05769; Helen Porter Rehabilitation and Nursing Home Memory Care Activities Fund, Porter Medical Center, Office of Development, 115 Porter Drive, Middlebury, VT 05753. ◊
