Letter to the editor: ACSD board member leaving, grateful for support
I will not be running for a second term on the ACSD School Board at this time. It’s been an honor to serve with intelligent, hard-working people who share their different perspectives with confidence. It’s been an invaluable learning experience. I’m fortunate to have had a seat at the table to understand, provide feedback, and vote on the issues for the past three years. The work has varied from mundane to intense, often resulting in strong public feedback. I’ve done my best to contribute positively to the process.
After much reflection, I’ve come to the bittersweet conclusion that I’m unable to manage the logistics of serving on the school board for another three-year term. There are changes that could be made so it would be easier for people like me to serve on the school board, manage the school calendar, and participate more in various ways. There have been many moments when my attendance at a meeting has prevented me from being present for my son or other personal commitments. He has been very supportive of my work, reacting with maturity and understanding every time I have had to attend a meeting instead of being on the sidelines to cheer him on, help with a project, or relax after a tough day. My employer and colleagues have also been supportive and understanding, allowing flexibility for me to arrive late, leave early, and attend meetings midday. There are a lot of people I need to thank!
I’m looking forward to having time to volunteer for the district and serve my community in other ways. I have many interests that have fallen by the wayside and opportunities I’ve declined to allow time for this work. I feel good about how the board has evolved and is now functioning in comparison to when my term began. I have great admiration for my colleagues on the school board and am confident that Dr. Wendy Baker is the right leader to navigate through the challenges on our horizon.
