Vergennes Police Log for Jan. 18

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Monday, Jan. 15, spent almost two-and-a-half hours monitoring the peaceful anti-war protest at the Collins Aerospace plant on Panton Road.

City police learned of the event, at which about five dozen protestors blocked workers set for a Collins shift change from entering the plant, just after 3:30 p.m. Two officers first responded, according to police, and were later joined by Police Chief Jason Ouellette and another officer.

Police said they took no action before leaving the scene at around 6 p.m., when they concluded there was no further reason to oversee a protest that ended about an hour later.

In action between Jan. 8 and 14, Vergennes police conducted six cruiser patrols, two traffic stops, and two property watches; processed an employment fingerprint request; responded to two false alarms; and also:

On Jan. 8 placed warning flyers on four vehicles left parked overnight on city streets in violation of the city’s winter parking ban.

On Jan. 9:

• Referred a complaint of dogs running loose in Booth Woods to the city’s animal control officer.

• Conducted a background investigation on an individual seeking federal employment.

On Jan. 11 worked with Vergennes Union High School administrators on a case of one male student allegedly emailing a picture of his male genitalia to another male student.

On Jan. 12:

• Asked a school bus driver to move his vehicle because it was blocking the intersection of Main and South Maple streets. Police said the bus had stopped to allow a VUHS sports team to buy snacks in Maplefields.

• Helped Vermont State Police at the city station by evaluating a suspect for driving while under the influence of drugs; the city Drug Recognition Expert concluded the suspect had done so.

• Helped Vergennes Area Rescue Squad personnel calm an agitated male at an East Street resident so they could treat his wife.
