Letter to the editor: College could add an honoree

In their commemoration of Stephen Douglass and Alexander Twilight (see Addison Independent, Sept. 7, Page 1A), Middlebury College might also honor Martin Freeman, salutatorian of the Class of 1848, who in 1850 at Allegheny Institute (later Avery College) became the first black professor in any American college and by 1856 the first black to be president of an American college.
