Letter to the editor: Taxes owed on former school?

In regards the June 23 story that ran under the headline “Former school won’t host recovery center after all,” the Vermont Statute that Alison Joseph mentioned does seem pretty clear that land that “Once (a property) stops being used for religious purposes, it becomes taxable.” (The statute is 32 V.S.A. § 3832 and can be read online at tinyurl.com/VTtaxExempt.)

So, in that case is the “former school” still being used? Because if not, it seems that the church should also be paying taxes on it rather than letting it sit as an abandoned eyesore and preventing infill development in a village area that sorely needs additional housing.
