ESSEX — The Mount Abraham/Vergennes boys’ middle school lacrosse team on June 11 claimed the Northern Vermont Youth Lacrosse League Division II championship, defeating top-seeded Milton in a final played in Essex.

MAV entered the tournament quarterfinal round as the No. 3 seed after regular season play and opened with a 3-0 win over South Burlington in Waterbury.

Next came a dramatic, 5-4 overtime victory over St. Albans, also in Waterbury. MAV trailed at the half, 4-3, tied the game with two minutes to go, and then got the OT game-winner from Oliver Zelonis.

Sunday brought the middle school MAV squad to Essex to face top-seed Milton. There, MAV controlled play and clamed a 4-1 victory.

Team supporters said they were proud of a team coached by William Halby that was applauded throughout the season by opponents and referees for their sportsmanship as well as skill.

The members of the team are Mason Atkins, Sawyer Visco-Lyons, Blake Davidson, Truman Halby, Otto Siegfried, Sam Gallivan, Tyler Munson, Addy Halby, Baxter Montgomery, Benji Havey, Luke Goodfellow, Levi Smith, Lincoln McGrath, Lincoln Painter, Mazin Swepston, Beckett Stilwell, Oliver Zelonis, Rowan Clark and Kestrel Edwards.
