Linda Ross Hadley, 89, of Shelburne
SHELBURNE — Linda Ross Hadley left us on April 20 at her care residence in Shelburne Vt., in the presence of her family. Linda was predeceased by her husband, Norman D. Hadley, in 2016, and leaves behind five sons and their wives: Jeff Hadley and Amalia Dutra of North Bethesda, Md.; Bruce and Heidi (Mortenson) Hadley of Duxbury, Ma.; Dale and Alison Cole-Hadley of Williston, Vt.; Ken and Rosemary (Stifter) Hadley of Annapolis, Md.; and Philip Hadley and Duffy Allen of Middlebury Vt. She has 11 grandchildren plus four of their spouses, and seven great-grandchildren (five girls!). She was a very active member of The Congregational Church of Middlebury, UCC.
Linda Ross was born to Maurice and Elmira (Adamson) Ross in Burlington, Vt., on Sept. 19, 1933, and grew up the middle of her sisters, Lisa and Nita. The Ross family lived for several years in Newton, Mass., where Linda started high school. When they moved back to Burlington, she met the love of her life at Burlington High School. Linda and Norman both graduated from the University of Vermont, Linda in 1955, where she studied elementary education.
This year, 2023, is the 70th anniversary of their marriage on Cape Cod in Chatham, Mass. They quickly started a family and then finished college. In 1967, the family moved to Middlebury, Vt., where Norman was employed at Middlebury College for 30 years. Together they raised their five sons, enjoying downhill and cross-country skiing at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl and the Rikert Ski Touring Center; also bicycling (Silver Streakers club), camping in the summer all around Vermont; supporting Middlebury College sports teams and sailing on Lake Champlain.
Linda was a top fundraiser for the Vermont Lung Association, raising money through her participation in Bike Trek and cross-country Ski Trek events. Notably, she and Norman biked from Seattle to San Diego in one such American Lung Association event.
A memorial service is planned for Friday, July 14, 2023, at 11 a.m., at the Congregational Church of Middlebury. In her memory, please send contributions to the American Lung Association: www.lung.org. ◊
