Tiger flying disc teams record victories
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ and boys’ Ultimate teams each picked up their first wins of the season in road games late last week.
On Thursday, April 13, the MUHS girls’ Ultimate team shrugged off windy conditions and record-setting heat — and the fact the squad had just one sub — and defeated host Mount Mansfield, 8-5. Coach Michelle Steele said early long-distance throws opened up the team’s offense.
Ari Graham-Gurland scored four goals, while Elise Heppell added two and Vivian Ross one. Ross led with four assists, and Mary Conklin and Graham-Gurland added two apiece. Steele also credited Graham-Gurland, the team’s spirit captain, for her efforts in helping the teams self-officiate what she called a “great spirited game.”
On Friday, April 14, the Tiger boys’ Ultimate squad took an early 5-1 lead on the way to a 12-6 victory at Mill River. Carter Lee scored all three of his goals in the early going to help MUHS get off to a fast start, while Trevor Schnoor led the team in goals with four. Ian Sinclair scored twice, and Benedict Diehl-Noble, Layne Chant and Callan McDowell all scored once.
Diehl-Noble and Lee each finished with four assists, Sinclair had two and McDowell and Schnoor had one apiece. Schnoor had a big game on defense with three Ds, while Lee and Sinclair each had two.
