VUHS, Mt. Abe baseball win a game each

ADDISON COUNTY — In baseball play in the past week, the teams from Vergennes and Mount Abraham union high schools had mixed results, and Otter Valley lost in their only game.
COMMODORES
On a rainy April 29 host Spaulding scored six times in the fifth to clinch a 13-3 victory over the Commodores. Winning pitcher Grady Chase allowed just two hits to VUHS, including an RBI single to Tucker Stearns. The Tide improved to 3-0 heading into a Saturday doubleheader at Mount Abe.
On Tuesday, VUHS crushed Milton, 19-2, in a game shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule. The Commodores sailed out to a 13-0 lead in the first inning, and never looked back. Barrett Barrows pitched the full five innings, giving up just the two runs in the fourth inning. The Commodore hurler was also a star at the plate, collecting three hits.
Other local notables in the contest included Tucker Stearns, who notched 4 RBIs, and Jarret Muzzy who plated three.
EAGLES
On Saturday the Eagles split a doubleheader with visiting Spaulding. The Eagles won the opener, 5-0, as Adam Mansfield tossed a six-hit shutout, striking out four. Mansfield also poked an RBI double, and Colby Lathrop added a pair of hits for the Eagles.
Spaulding (4-1) claimed the nightcap, 17-3, in five innings, putting the game away with a seven-run third inning. Lathrop doubled twice for the Eagles, and Carter Monks singled twice.
On Tuesday, the Eagles sustained another setback, this one an 11-5 loss to Enosburg. Ryan Whitcomb was the tough-luck loser, as he gave up only two runs in five innings, on two hits and four walks. He fanned four. Enosburg exploded for eight runs in the decisive sixth inning. Adam Mansfield and Neil Guy each had two hits for Mount Abe, with Guy also notching two RBIs.
OTTERS
The Otters hosted Windsor on Tuesday, and were on the wrong end of a 20-6 score. Game stats were unavailable at press time. Otter Valley was also scheduled to play at Mount Abe Wednesday afternoon, after the Independent had gone to press.
