Girls’ hoop: VUHS tops Mount Abe; Eagles win

ADDISON COUNTY — Vergennes topped rival Mount Abraham to highlight local girls’ high school basketball action in the past week.
In other games, Mount Abe won on the road, Middlebury lost on the road, and Otter Valley dropped a pair of contests to tough competition.
This was the first week of winter sports in Vermont. High school sports competitions at indoor venues have been on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gov. Scott recently lifted the ban on all but wrestling as of Friday, Feb. 12.

EAGLES-VUHS
On Feb. 12 the host Commodores broke away from a 24-24 halftime tie to top the Eagles, 50-32. VUHS Coach Billy Waller said his team’s depth — 11 Commodores played — and full-court play-to-player defense were factors against an Eagle team that played shorthanded.
The Eagles led, 24-18, late in the first half, before VUHS knotted the score. Waller said the Commodores clinched the victory with a 16-2 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters.
Pacing a balanced VUHS effort were Sydney Jewell (13 points, six rebounds), Kate Gosliga (12 points, seven boards) and Felicia Poirier (seven points, seven rebounds, six steals).
Cami Masse scored eight points to lead the Eagles, and Madi Gile, Abby Reen and Maia Jensen added six apiece.
On Monday the Eagles evened their record with a 38-37 win at Winooski. The Spartans took a 15-4 lead after the first period, but the Eagles rallied to tie it at the half, 18-18, and the game was still knotted at 28-28 entering the final period.
Five Eagles scored as they took at 37-31 lead, but the Spartans fought back behind Kiara Mack (15 points total) to tie the game at 37-37. A late Masse free throw then proved decisive. Jenson led the Eagles with 12 points, and Reen and Masse scored eight apiece. Masse added 14 boards.
The Commodores also hosted Milton on Monday; see story on Page 2B.

TIGERS
On Feb. 12 Coach Chris Altemose, the former longtime Tiger boys’ program head, made his girls’ varsity debut in the MUHS game at Colchester. The Tigers came up short, 40-32, despite a game-high 16 points from MUHS sophomore forward Ele Sellers. Ryleigh Garrow scored 15 to lead the Lakers.

OTTERS
On Feb. 12, host D-I Rutland took a big early lead and coasted to a 51-21 victory over the Otters. Sophomore Emily Peduto debuted for OV with eight points.
On Monday host Fair Haven defeated the Otters, 63-33, as Slater Ryleigh Coloutti recorded 29 points and 15 rebounds. Courtney Brewster added nine points and 12 rebounds for the winners.
Alice Keith paced the 0-2 Otters with 13 points in a game moved from Tuesday at OV.
