VERGENNES — Vergennes police are discussing with the Addison County State’s Attorney whether charges should be filed against a local resident who on June 10 placed what Police Chief George Merkel said were “eight or 10” signs around the city using “vulgar and derogatory” language to refer to him and the state’s attorney. 
The first sign was found outside a Monkton Road bank, and police soon found and removed the rest of them. The resident has a history of disagreements with local law enforcement, Merkel said. 
In other action between June 1 and 14, Vergennes police operated 34 motorized patrols and went on foot for nine more, conducted three property watches, and also:
On June 1: 
•  Passed on to Vermont State Police a report of a suspicious man at a Ferrisburgh home asking questions of a resident.
•  Performed a background check on a city resident on behalf of Homeland Security.
•  Checked the welfare of children on behalf of Vergennes Union Elementary School; police said they were OK.
•  Took a report from an East Street resident that a rock had been stolen from a garden. 
On June 3:
•  Attempted to serve a no-stalking order on a female and learned she no longer lived in the city.
•  Received a tip about alleged illegal drug activity in Vergennes.
•  Helped a motorist jump-start a stalled vehicle.
On June 4:
•  Heard from a family member that a 12-year-old had left for ice cream an hour before and had not returned; police soon learned the girl showed up.
•  Looked into a report that a dog had been tied up on New Haven Road within reach of the sidewalk.
On June 5:
•  Began investigating the theft of a USB cable and perfume from Kinney Drug Store; police said they were reviewing video.
•  Went to First Street to help the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad with a drunken woman who had fallen.
•  Looked into a report of a suspicious man in a West Main Street driveway and ultimately concluded there was no problem.
On June 6 helped the public works department deal with a downed tree on South Water Street.
On June 8 grounded a vehicle in Ferrisburgh driven by an operator with a suspended license. 
On June 9: 
•  Helped drivers get into locked vehicles on Panton Road and on McKnight Lane in Waltham. 
•  Identified and contacted an individual who had committed a minor theft from Kinney Drug; police said the individual admitted the theft, and they are discussing how to handle the case with the Addison County State’s Attorney’s Office.
•  Responded to a report of a landscaping truck and trailer blocking traffic near the intersection of High Street and Macdonough Drive; it was gone upon arrival.
On June 11: 
•  Dealt with a complaint about an anonymous job complaint sent to a North Maple Street employer.
•  Notified the owner of an occupied home that it had been hit by a falling tree. 
•  Went to Route 125 in Addison to help the Vermont State Police deal with a report of a woman chasing her husband around the house with a hammer; police said she was suffering with dementia, that a family friend had arrived and taken the hammer away, and the woman was taken to Porter Hospital for evaluation.
•  At the request of a parent, checked in on his daughter who was reported by his ex-wife to have COVID-19; police said she did not and she was OK.
On June 12:
•  Stood by on the city green while a motorist waited until a wrecker came for his disabled vehicle.
•  Investigated a collision in which a construction vehicle’s door opened and struck parked vehicles along Main Street.
•  Told the owner of a loud, speeding motorcycle on Green Street to slow down.
•  After failing to contact the owners of two vehicles parked on Main Street that appeared to have been sideswiped instead left a card.
On June 13: 
•  Looked for two suspicious women reported to be in an East Street yard. 
•  Received a cellphone found in the Shaw’s parking lot and returned it to the owner.
On June 14: 
•  Contacted the city dog warden for a dog running loose on South Maple Street.
•  Received a report of a vehicle speeding on Green Street, but couldn’t find it.
