Vermont State Police Log: Police investigate gas station burglaries
ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police report late night burglaries at two different Route 7 gas stations this past week.
In the first instance, state police on May 12 at 2:31 a.m. looked into a report of a motion alarm at the Jiffy Mart convenience store in New Haven Junction. Troopers discovered that two people had forced entry through the front door and stole an undetermined amount of cigarettes and other tobacco products. The burglars quickly departed the area on foot
Meanwhile, on May 15 at three-quarters of an hour past midnight, state police responded to the report of a motion alarm at Starry Night Cafe on Route 7 in North Ferrisburgh. Troopers found that someone had forced there way in through the back door, but nothing was reported stolen.
About 10 minutes later troopers headed a mile and a half up the street to the Ferrisburgh Jolley gas station and convenience store near Stage Road to a report there of a motion alarm. Police investigation indicated one burglar had entered the business and stole an undetermined amount of cigarettes, vaping products, and other tobacco products. The subject quickly departed the area on foot, troopers surmised, but they did not know if they were picked up by a motor vehicle.
Anyone with information regarding either of these incidents is asked to contact the New Haven state police barracks at 802-388-4919.
Middlebury police assisted state police at the first incident, Vergennes police gave a hand at the second.
In other recent activity, troopers:
• On May 13 at around 7:24 a.m. responded to a one-car crash on Route 116 South near Cobble Road in Bristol. They found that the driver, identified as Ginni Lyels, 31, of Bristol was entrapped in her vehicle and was unconscious. Police said Lyles was traveling southbound at an unknown speed when the 2017 GMC Acadia she was driving left the road and collided with a tree and power pole before rolling onto its left side coming to an uncontrolled rest on Route 116 South.
Members of the Bristol and New Haven fire departments arrived and extricated Lyles from her vehicle. Members of the Bristol and Middlebury rescue squads provided emergency first aid and care for Lyles, who was taken to UVM Medical Center for evaluation, and was released with no serious injuries.
Police closed Route 116 for several hours to clear the crash scene and the electrical wires in the road.
• On May 16 at approximately 9:35 a.m. were dispatched to a two-car crash on West River Road near Forge Hill Road in Lincoln. After investigating, state police report that Shaun Colo, 57, of Lincoln was driving a 2018 GMC Sierra eastbound on West River Road, traveled left of center, entirely in the opposing lane, at the same time that Eva McDonough, 57, of Lincoln was piloting a 2016 Audi A4 westbound on the same road. McDonough tried to avoid a crash but was unable to do so, police report.
McDonough’s Audi was totaled in the crash and she was taken to Porter Hospital for suspected minor injuries. Colo was unhurt but his GMC sustained front-end damage.
Troopers investigated and noted Colo showed several signs of alcohol impairment, they said. They ended up citing Colo for driving under the influence, second offense, and negligent driving. They also ticketed him for driving on the wrong side of the road.
State police were assisted by the Lincoln Fire Department and Bristol Rescue Squad.
