ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are investigating a Granville house fire that killed a 37-year-old Granville man in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police said that Nathan Twitchell succumbed due to smoke inhalation, and they ruled the death an accident. As of Tuesday they had not determined the cause of the fire but it was not suspicious. 
At around 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 5, 911 operators received a call regarding a house fire at 210 Post Office Hill Road. The Granville Fire Department as well as other area fire departments responded to the scene to fight the fire.
Members of the Vermont State Police Field Force Division, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, and Department of Fire Safety also arrived on the scene to investigate.
The fire was successfully put out, but around 1:30 p.m. investigators found human remains within the debris of the house. Police could not identify the remains, and they took it to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington for autopsy and to positively identify the person who died in the fire. The Medical Examiner’s Office verified Twitchell as the person lost in the fire.
Vermont State Police ask anyone with information regarding the investigation into the fire to contact either Det. Sgt. Thomas McCoy of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation or Det. Sgt. Steven Otis of the Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit. Both officers can be reached at 802-722-4600.
In other recent activity, troopers responded to two reports of assault in Ferrisburgh. These included:
• On Dec. 25 at 11:45 p.m. troopers were dispatched to a home on Middlebrook Road in Ferrisburgh on the report of an altercation. Police determined that Christopher Littlefield, 34, of Shoreham had assaulted a Ferrisburgh man and fled the scene. On Jan. 1, state police found Littlefield and charged him with simple assault.
• On Dec. 31 around 8:30 p.m. troopers responded to an altercation at a home on Vaughn Court in North Ferrisburgh. Police said their investigation showed that Kenneth Clark, 49, of North Ferrisburgh had assaulted a household member. Troopers arrested Clark; cited him for 1st degree aggravated domestic assault with a deadly weapon, 1st degree aggravated domestic assault, resisting arrest, and offense committed in the presence of a child; and lodged him at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility for lack of $5,000 bail.
