MUHS gymnastics opens up campaign
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School gymnastics team opened its season on Saturday by hosting St. Johnsbury and Montpelier at Middlebury Union Middle School.
The more experienced St. Johnsbury and Montpelier squads finished first and second with 115.95 and 97.95 points, respectively, while the young Tigers scored 92.2 points.
MUHS Coach Natalia Harthman said the Tigers, whose only upperclassman is senior Carly Burger, learned skills and unique elements from watching the Montpelier and St. Johnsbury gymnasts, who have more experience because they participate on club teams as well as school teams.
Also competing for the Tigers on Saturday were sophomores Alyza Alger and Kaylee Ellis and freshmen Rose Bright, Mary Johnson and Kaya Wright. Fair Haven independent Juliana Williams also practices and competes with the Tigers, but her scores do not count for the team.
Harthman said her young team will show improvement as the Tigers have more time to practice and the season progresses. They will have two practices this week before visiting Randolph on Friday.
“The first meet is always tough,” Harthman said. “We just got this moving, and from here it will be smooth sailing.”
