Spaulding tops MUHS boys’ hockey

BARRE — Host Spaulding got past the Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team this past Wednesday, 3-1. The Tide improved to 2-0, while the Tigers dropped to 0-2 heading into a Saturday game at Rutland played after the early holiday deadline for this edition of the Independent.
Next up for the Tigers is their annual holiday tournament this coming Friday and Saturday. They will host Brookline, Mass., at 7 p.m. on Friday, and play at a time to be determined on Saturday. The Tiger girls are also hosting a tournament those two days, starting with a contest vs. Rutland at 5 p.m. on Friday.
On Wednesday in Barre the shots favored the Tigers, 20-19. But the Tide took charge with two first-period strikes, by Heath Atwood at 6:02 and by Colby Berard, from Attilio Perantoni, in the final minute.
In the second period a Devon Kearns’ power-play goal at 13:10, assisted by Hale Hescock, pulled the Tigers within one, but another late-period goal by Berard restored the Tide’s two-goal advantage.
Spaulding goalie Grant Otis made 19 Saves, while Jeff Stearns stopped 16 shots for the Tigers.
