Women’s basketball wins three

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team recently picked up three more victories to improve to 6-0. The Panthers will visit Colby-Sawyer on Saturday afternoon.
On Nov. 26 the Panthers got past previously undefeated Castleton, 64-60, in overtime at home. After regulation ended in a 52-52 tie, The Panthers opened overtime with two Kira Waldman layups sandwiched around a three-point play from Betsy Knox for a 59-54 edge with 3:21 left.
The Spartans (5-1) made it 62-60 on an Emilee Bose jumper with 1:20 remaining, but Knox nailed down the win with two free throws while the Spartans missed a trio of threes.
The Spartans used a 12-0 run in the third period to surge on top, 36-29, but layup by Panther forward Maya Davis tied the score after three quarters, 37-37.
The teams exchanged the lead in the fourth quarter. Davis put Middlebury on top, 52-49, with two free throws with 1:13 left. A layup from Spartan Katlyn Toomey at 0:49 made it 52-51. After a Panther turnover, the Spartans missed a three and a putback, but Bose was fouled on the rebound with 0.5 seconds left and hit one of two free throws to force overtime.
Davis paced the Panthers with 21 points to go along with nine rebounds. Knox posted 15 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots. Freshman Gianna Palli added six points, six rebounds and six assists.
On this past Saturday the Panthers outlasted host Cabrini, 65-59. Cabrini, in Radnor, Pa., dropped to 5-2.
The Panthers led for most of the first half, but Cabrini closed the second quarter with a 10-0 run to tie the game at the intermission, 30-30. 
Middlebury regrouped and led by as many as eight, 40-32, in the third period, but the Cavaliers pulled to within 46-42 after three and then tied the game at 46-46 on a hoop from Ashley Tutzauer with 7:45 remaining.
Cabrini took the lead at 56-55 with 3:01 remaining on another Tutzauer hoop. Two Knox free throws put Middlebury back on top at 60-59 with just 46 seconds left to play. Cabrini then turned the ball over and was forced to foul, and Middlebury nailed down the win by hitting five of six free throws.
Knox paced Middlebury with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Davis added 17 points and nine boards. Waldman scored 13 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals, while freshman Reagan McDonald netted eight off the bench. Middlebury outrebounded Cabrini, 42-26. Tutzauer paced the Cavaliers with 19 points.
On Tuesday the Panthers got past visiting Sage, 73-54, by outscoring the 2-5 Gators by 31-12 in the fourth quarter. The Panthers led at the break, 35-32, but scored just one point in the final 8:14 of the third quarter, and the teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 42-42.
The Panthers then gradually pulled ahead and led, 56-50 with 5:13 remaining, before closing the game on a 15-4 run. Middlebury hit 11 of 15 shots during the fourth quarter, including four of six three-point attempts.
 Waldman tossed in 21 points to go along with four assists, while McDonald scored 14 off the bench. Davis, a senior, finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds and reached 501 career rebounds. She also added five assists and three blocks, while Palli netted 11 points. Gessica Patregnani led Sage with 14 points.
The Panthers played without Knox, a six-foot junior forward who is leading the team with 16.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Earlier in the day she was on crutches, but there was no immediate word on the severity of her injury.
