Catharine Bevin Smith (Kay), 94, of Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Catharine Bevin Smith (Kay), 94, of Middlebury, died at home on Nov. 30, 2019, after a short illness, with her family by her side. She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Aug. 5, 1925, the daughter of Allen Williams and Catharine (Wheeler) Bevin.
Kay moved to Long Island in 1933, graduated from the Cathedral School of St. Mary in Garden City in 1943, and from Smith College in Northampton, Mass., in 1947, with a B.A. in English. That summer, she married Dutton Smith who had just served four years in the Navy, and the couple moved to Middlebury, Vt., where her husband completed his education at Middlebury College.
They welcomed five children, one of which predeceased them in 1949, at the age of 3 months. She and Dutton were married for 68 years, all of them filled with laughter and rich memories made with family, friends, literary and theatrical productions, and travel, including 17 years aboard their beloved sailboat, the Last Duchess.
In addition to her natural gift for the art of raising children, Kay’s passions were books, correspondence with hundreds, and the ardent defense of animals and others less fortunate than herself. She cared for Dutton for four years at home until he lost his battle with Alzheimer’s in 2015.
Kay is survived by her four children: Torrey Joy and husband, David, Carlie Barnhart and husband Terry, Allen Smith and wife Rose Lovshin, and Dutton Smith, Jr. and wife Kathleen (Wildey); seven grandchildren, Tim Joy and wife Elin (Lundstrom), Nick Joy and wife Xiaoli He, Zoe Wood, Abby Lovshin-Smith and husband Mitchell Watson, Rini Lovshin-Smith and husband Declan McDaid, Tyler Smith and wife Meg (McFadden), Amanda and husband Chris; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Julie Taylor of New Canaan, Conn., and sister-in-law Dosia Casey of Albany, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Addison County Home Health and Hospice or Homeward Bound (Addison County Humane Society).
There will be an open house in her honor on Dec. 14, 2019, from 2-6 p.m., at the family’s home at 46 Road 18 in Middlebury.◊
