MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team remained unbeaten by picking up a win and a tie against two ranked NESCAC opponents this past weekend. The 5-0-3 Panthers will visit Bates this Saturday.
This past Saturday Panther Liam Sloan converted a penalty kick with 6:25 remaining in overtime to lift the Panthers to a 2-1 home NESCAC triumph over previously unbeaten Connecticut College, then ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division III. The Camels are 5-1-2 after a tie at Williams on Sunday.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead 6:50 into the contest when Brandon Reid fired a low shot from the left side past a diving A.J. Marcucci (three saves), who had already denied Reid once.
The Camels countered 2:11 later, when Augie Djerdjaj beat a defender and fired a shot inside the right post. The tally ended Middlebury goalie Ryan Grady’s streak of not allowing a score at 502:51. Grady finished with two saves. 
Sloan for Middlebury and Camel Liam Noonan had chances in the second half.
In overtime, Middlebury’s Max Drazen was taken down while charging to the net, resulting in a penalty kick. Sloan fired a shot into the left side for the game-winner.
On Sunday the Panthers and host No. 2 Amherst (6-0-2, 3-0-2) settled for a 1-1 tie.
Middlebury got on the scoreboard first 15:13 before halftime. Noah Hannam backfooted a pass to a charging Henry Wilhelm, who one-touched a six-yard shot into the right side past goalie Kofi Hope-Gund. 
With 31:25 remaining in regulation Mammoth German Giammattei worked his way into the Panther box, but Grady came off his line and stuck out his right foot to deny him. 
The Mammoths tied the contest at 1-1 with 9:18 left. Dane Lind gathered a loose ball nearly 35 yards out and sent a pass forward to Giammattei, who ripped a low shot just under Grady’s right arm.
About four minutes later Amherst had a good scoring chance, but Grady punched away a Lind shot from 10 yards straight out. The Mammoths outshot the Panthers, 20-1, in the half, during which Grady made seven of his 10 saves.
Giammattei had the best chance in overtime, but a defender blocked his attempt from 12 yards out in a scramble.
Hope-Gund made four stops for Amherst. The Mammoths outshot the Panthers, 33-10.
