MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team opened its season with three wins between Sept. 4 and 8. The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III to open the season thanks to their run to the NCAA final in 2018, were scheduled to visit Plattsburgh State late on Wednesday and will travel to NESCAC rival Bowdoin on Saturday.
On Sept. 4 the Panthers topped visiting Plymouth State, 5-0. The Panthers took a 3-0 first-half lead. Simone Ameer scored on a through-ball from Eliza Robinson, Isabelle Hartnett heading in a corner kick from Anna Glovin, and freshman Quinn Rogers netted a cross from Ellie Greenberg.
In the second half, Olivia Miller headed in a corner from Cate Shellenbeck, and Robinson found the top-right corner from outside the box after taking a feed from Miller.
In goal for the hosts, Ursula Alwang did not face shot in the opening half, while Eva Shaw made one save in the second half. Two Plymouth goalies combined for eight saves as the Panthers outshot their foes, 24-6.
On Saturday the Panthers earned a 2-0 NESCAC win at Wesleyan, which earned more territory and a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks. But the Panthers created more dangerous chances, and converted twice. 
Middlebury broke through 3:32 before the half, when Ameer collected a long pass from back Rose Evans and chipped the ball home over charging Cardinal keeper Sarah Hammond (five saves). Middlebury made it 2-0 late in the second half, when Ellie Greenberg converted a through ball from Virginia Charman.
Alwang (five saves) made big stops in each half on Cardinal striker Gianna Argento. The shots favored the Cardinals, 11-10.
On Sunday, the Panthers outshot visiting Wheaton, 24-3, but prevailed only by 2-1 in a game that saw many Middlebury substitutes. Ameer gave Middlebury the lead with 6:55 expired by netting a Kristen Monten through ball.
The Panthers made it 2-0 at 20:21 of the half on a corner kick from the left side. Magnolia Moskun served to Miller near the penalty strike, Miller nodded the ball to Rogers a few feet out from the right post, and Miller tapped it home. 
Wheaton scored in the 59th minute. Aymara O’Brien-Pappalardo served a free kick from the right side to the far post, where Amanda Dunton one-timed it home. Shortly afterward Alwang dove to deny Chloe Troy.
In goal, Shaw didn’t face a shot in the opening half, while Alwang had two saves in the final 45 minutes. Wheaton’s Alexa Barbagallo made seven stops.
