Period instruments featured at Rochester series

ROCHESTER — The Rochester Chamber Music Society closes their 25th summer season on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 4 p.m., in the Federated Church of Rochester.  The grand Baroque concert will feature period instruments with performers from the Boston area, including, Na’ama Lion, traverso; Julia McKenzie, violin; Gigi Turgeon, violin; Anna Griffis, viola; Rebecca Shaw, cello; Andres Arceci, bass; and Cynthia Huard on harpsichord.
Na’ama Lion
Lion is well known in the Boston area as a versatile performer on early flutes.  She has explored medieval music, playing with “Sequentia;” Renaissance music with the Renaissance flute quartet “Travesada;” and Baroque, classical and romantic music with numerous groups.  She is a sought-after teacher at summer workshops, including Amherst Early Music and the International Baroque Institute at Longy. Lion has recorded for Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Telarc and private labels.
Julia McKenzie
McKenzie performs internationally on historical and modern violins in a wide range of musical styles.  She specializes in period performance with the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, and Newton Baroque, and is a founding member of the Rowe’s lane Quartet, a period string quartet focusing on chamber music of the early 19th century.  Also a dedicated teacher, McKenzie enjoys presenting period instrument demonstrations and master classes, and is on the faculty of the All Newton Music School and the Prep School of her alma mater, the New England Conservatory.
Guiomar Turgeon
Turgeon, violinist, received her B.M. and M.M. from Boston University.  She performs regularly with many Boston ensembles and is the concertmaster of Boston College Chorale, Commonwealth Chorale, Dedham Choral Society, and the Heritage Chorale.  She holds tenured positions with Boston Baroque and the Handel and Haydn Society and has toured the U.S. and Europe with both groups.  She currently is the artist-in-residence at Hill Crest Academy in Norton, Mass.
Anna Griffis
Violist and violinist Griffis performs as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player throughout the United States and abroad.  She is a member of New Bedford Symphony (principal), Albany Symphony, and Hartford Symphony, and plays with Rhode Island Philharmonic and Emmanuel Music.  In addition to her performing career, Anna is on faculty at the Dana Hall School of Music, maintains a private studio, and serves as the Coordinator of P.R. and Box Office for the Tufts Music Department.
Andrew Arceci
Performer, composer/arranger, and scholar, bassist Arceci has performed throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.  In Europe he has appeared with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (U.K.), Oxford Baroque (U.K.), and Collegium Musicum Den Haag (The Netherlands). In the United States, he has collaborated with the Boston Camerata, Emmanuel Music, Handel and Haydn Society and many others.  Currently, he directs the Collegium Musicum at Wellesley College, as well as the Winchendon Music Festival.
Rebecca Shaw
Shaw has a genuine excitement and enthusiasm for the music and string instruments she plays.  She has been heard with various ensembles in the Boston area, and has played with ensembles including Musical Offering, The Weckmann Project, The Arcadian Players, among others. She holds a Masters Degree and a Performance Certificate in Chamber Music from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Institute of Chamber Music and a Bachelor of Music degree from Rutgers University.
Cynthia Huard
Pianist Huard has appeared as a featured soloist at the Isabell Stewart Gardner Museum and the Aston Magna Early Music Festival and in recital as a pianist and harpsichordist throughout the United States and in Europe.  Huard holds advanced degrees from Indiana University and the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Graz, Austria. As Artistic Director of the Rochester Chamber Music Society summer series for 25 years, she has performed with Lark Quartet, Johannes Quartet, cellist Nathaniel Rosen and many other chamber players.
This is one impressive line-up of musicians and they’re sure to offer an equally impressive final concert on Sunday. Concert admission is by donation. For information visit rcmsvt.org or call (802) 767-9234.
