Book review: The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck — by Mark Manson

(Harper)
Any book that starts off with Charles Bukowski as a success story is a book that needs a broad readership. Everyone, young people especially should know why — Bukowski never tried to be anything other than what he was. He didn’t care about success. He only cared about being unflinchingly honest. The author, Mark Manson, who happens to be a mega-successful blogger, contends that improving our lives begins with acceptance. You’re not exceptional. You’re flawed, we all are. Let’s be honest, handle adversity, and get on with it. “This book will help you think a little bit more clearly about what you’re choosing to find important in life and what you’re choosing to find unimportant.” It’s not about alleviating your problems or your pain. It’s straight talk, albeit academically researched straight talk, delivered in an honest, forthright way, and sometimes delivered by Disappointment Panda. Targeted story topics communicate the Subtle Art and how it was achieved and a series of “Subtleties” lay out the process. It’s entertaining, revealing, surprising, profane and funny. Sometimes counterintuitive is the way to go.
