Mount Abe, Otter Valley boys win in basketball

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham and Otter Valley picked up road wins to highlight recent local high school boys’ basketball action, during which Vergennes and Middlebury came up short on their home courts.
EAGLES
Mount Abe kept its bounce-back season rolling with a 52-39 win on Dec. 30 at Winooski. Jack Willis tossed in 19 as the Eagles improved to 4-2, and Jackson Counter scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half as Mount Abe pulled away.
Eagle Coach Martin Clark credited his team’s defense and said Chris Wood played a strong game on the boards.
OTTERS
Also on Dec. 30, Otter Valley kept winning, rallying from a late 60-55 deficit at Windsor to win, 63-60. After Dylan Mackie scored five points on a three-point play and a jumper to tie the game, Derek Aines sank a buzzer-beating three-pointer to make for a happy bus ride back to Brandon.
Aines and Josh Letourneau (20 points each) and Mackie (17) combined for most of OV’s points.
On Tuesday, visiting Mill River improved to 5-1 by defeating OV, 62-48. Mike Morgan scored 21 to lead MRU, and Austin MacMurray sank five three-pointers. The Otters dropped to 4-2 despite 16 points from Aines, nine from Mackie and eight from Letourneau.
COMMODORES
On Dec. 30, visiting Mill River rallied for a 53-47 victory at VUHS, which led by 28-14 at the half. MRU’s Morgan (18 points) had a big fourth quarter for the Minutemen, which improved to 4-1.
Adam Gill scored 27 points to lead Vergennes, and Lance Bergmans added 10.
The Commodores carried an 0-6 record into a game scheduled at Burr & Burton on Wednesday evening after deadline for the Independent sports section.
TIGERS
On Tuesday visiting Metro foe Mount Mansfield bolted to a 32-12 halftime lead on the way to a 68-24 victory over MUHS. J.D. Goettelmann’s eight points led the 0-7 Tigers.
