Middlebury Swim Team falls to famaliar foe in fun evening

By ANDY KIRKALDY
BURLINGTON — Host Burlington Tennis Club coasted to a 268-164 victory over the Middlebury Swim Team (MST) in Tuesday Champlain Valley Swim League action.
Despite the setback, MST’s third in as many outings, parent and organizer Jenn Staats said the evening was enjoyable, and not only for the good weather and smooth organization by host BST.
Mary Hogan School principal Tom Buzzell coaches BTC, and the annual reunion of Buzzell and many Mary Hogan pupils also helped make for a fun event, Staats said.
“Tom and his students always really enjoy seeing each other at these meets,” Staats said. “We lost, but we had a great time.”
In the pool, Devon Kearns provided the biggest MST highlight by winning three 14-and-under boys’ races, while Julian Schmitt prevailed in two U-18 boys’ events.
Winning one race apiece were Holly Staats, Calista Carl, Will Carpenter, Connor McNamara, Ellie Ross and swimmer/coach Harriet Milligan. Emersyn Brookman and Jacob Brookman placed in three events apiece.
MST did not fare well in medley relays, winning just twice, but went 5-0 in freestyle relays, sweeping the U-14 and U-18 races and picking up a victory in the U-12 girls’ event.
MST also hosted a meet on July 7; see story.
