Tiger dancers perform well at home event

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School dance team on Friday earned top-three finishes in both its disciplines in the Tigers’ only home competition of the winter, held in the MUHS gymnasium.
The Tiger team trailed only Mount Mansfield in the six-team Hip Hop competition, while Mount Mansfield also won the five-team Jazz discipline, with Enosburg edging the Tigers for second place.
Three teams competed in Pom, with Richford, Mount Anthony and Springfield running 1-2-3.
In Hip Hop, the Mount Mansfield and Middlebury teams were the clear choices on the judges’ scorecards as the top two teams, with BFA-St. Albans a distant third. Mount Anthony took fourth, followed by Enosburg and Richford.
The judges gave Mount Mansfield top marks across the board in Jazz, as well, but sentiment was split between Enosburg and MUHS, and second-place Enosburg’s margin over the Tigers was just a point. Springfield and St. Albans trailed, in that order.
In the JV competition, teams were scored on the discipline of their choice. Judges rated the Mount Mansfield Jazz program as the top performance, with Tiger Jazz and Hip Hop efforts taking both second and third.
The Mount Abraham JV team’s Pom performance scored well, with a ranking of fifth out of nine, and the Eagles’ Hip Hop program took eighth.
The other JV competitors were Mount Mansfield Hip Hop, fourth; Mount Anthony Pom, sixth; Mount Anthony Hip Hop, seventh; and Enosburg Hip Hop, ninth.
Next up for the Tiger Dance team is the NVAC championship competition at Mount Mansfield on this coming Saturday. Vergennes Union High School will host the state championships on Feb. 20 at 5 p.m.
