Vergennes Police Log: Police keep close eye on commercial trucks

VERGENNES — In an otherwise mostly quiet week between Nov. 30 and Dec. 6, Vergennes police dealt with a couple of cases of truck traffic enforcement and also participated with other area law enforcement agencies on a two-day, grant-funded detail that also focused on commercial truck traffic.
On Dec. 3 city police responded to a report of a northbound tractor-trailer unit weaving across the centerline of Route 22A. Police found and pulled over the vehicle and ticketed its operator for falsifying his operator’s log and violating the law banning driving for more than 14 hours in a 24-hour period.
On Dec. 4 Vergennes police stopped a tractor-trailer unit for speeding on Main Street and for defective equipment. Police ticketed the driver for defective equipment and for failing to observe the 14-hour rule and placed the truck out of service for 24 hours.
On Dec. 2 and 3 city police joined Shelburne police, Department of Homeland Security and Department of Motor Vehicles personnel, and the Addison County Sheriff’s Department in a regional, grant-funded effort focused on commercial truck traffic enforcement.
In other incidents between Nov. 30 and Dec. 6, Vergennes police:
•  On Nov. 30 issued a number of warnings about the winter overnight parking ban on city streets.
•  On Dec. 3 helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad lift a patient at a Third Street home.
•  On Dec. 5 helped Vermont State Police by responding to an alarm at the home of an elderly Waltham resident; police found no problem.
•  On Dec. 5 stopped a car for speeding in Vergennes and smelled marijuana; after a consent search, police issued court diversion paperwork for marijuana possession and issued a ticket for paraphernalia possession as well as one for speeding.
