MIDDLEBURY — Clear skies and mild temperatures helped bring out a large number of runners and such for the town of Middlebury’s 39th annual Turkey Trot and Gobble Wobble this past Sunday. The races had 217 participants this year compared to 176 last year, according to Middlebury Recreation Director Terry Arnold.
The winners received a 20-pound frozen turkey. The event also raised $950 for charity.
The 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race, which ran from far out on South Street Extension north into the village and finished at the town gym, saw 137 finishers. The 10K (6.2-mile) race, which started at the same spot but saw runners first head a mile-plus into Cornwall before turning around and heading back toward Middlebury village, boasted 80 finishers.
Overall 5K winner Aaron De Toledo, a senior at Middlebury College and the cross country coach at Middlebury Union High School, ran a pace of 5:40 per mile. The 16-year-old second-place finisher, MUHS junior soccer player Nick Wilkerson, ran a 5:44 per mile pace. Sarah Homich of South Burlington ran 22:28 to win the women’s division, followed by Middlebury Union Middle School seventh-grader Camille Malhotra in 23:46.
In the 10K, Jeremy Read of South Paris, Maine, ran an average of 6:02 per mile to win in 37:02. He was chased by Middlebury’s Ben Bruno, who crossed the finish line in 38:03. Burlington’s Jess Martin (40:19) and Brooklyn, N.Y., resident Erica Goodman (44:48) went 1-2 in the women’s division.
