Vergennes Police Log for Oct. 15: 19-year-old cited for taking car, credit card fraud

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Oct. 8 arrested a 19-year-old city resident on three counts after he allegedly took a family member’s car and credit card without permission and left the state.
City police lodged Jesse Sawyer at the Marble Valley Correctional Center after citing him for operating without the owner’s consent, aggravated; driving with a suspended license; and false pretenses, for allegedly using the credit card. The driving without the owner’s consent charge was a felony because Sawyer allegedly crossed a state line into New York, where the car was recovered.
Police first received a call from a Mountain View Lane resident on Oct. 7 alleging that Sawyer had taken the car and the credit card. Police said the car was recovered in New York, but that Sawyer had returned to Vergennes, where they arrested him.
In other incidents between Oct. 5 and 11, Vergennes police:
• On Oct. 5 referred to the Attorney General’s Office a resident’s report of a scam call from someone masquerading as an IRS agent.
• On Oct. 5 heard a request from a resident that a no-trespass order against her ex-husband be renewed; police issued the order on Oct. 8.
• On Oct. 5 were told by a resident that she had already notified her bank about fraudulent activity on one of her accounts.
• On Oct. 5 checked on the welfare of a city resident on behalf of Colchester police; city police helped her find counseling.
• On Oct. 7 responded to a two-car accident on School Street.
• On Oct. 7 were told by a city resident that she had been assaulted while in Ferrisburgh; police took her statement, called the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad and referred the case to Vermont State Police.
• On Oct. 9 backed up VSP while searching a vehicle in Shoreham.
