Each local high school boasts champ at D-II state meet

EAST MONTPELIER — Athletes from Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Vergennes won events at Saturday’s Division II championship meet at U-32 High School in East Montpelier.
MUHS junior Hannah Buttolph repeated as the girls’ high jump champion, clearing five feet, two inches to win by six inches. That height would have won the D-I meet by four inches.
Mount Abe freshman Lydia Pitts continued her dominance in girls’ D-II hurdling, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 16.46 and the 300 in 49.84.
Two relay teams also brought home gold. The Commodore four-by-100-meter boys’ squad of Sebby Crowell, Liam Hayes, Chris Castillo and Jake Dombek prevailed in 45.66.
The MUHS girls’ 4X100 squad of Kat Townsend, Megan Townsend, Gretta Groves and Chloe Kane won in 52.65.
The Tiger boys’ and girls’ squads each finished fourth overall, the best team performances among the local schools.
Many other athletes excelled by placing in events. The Independent will publish a full report on all participants in the Thursday edition.
