Opinion: In this Vermont criminal case justice was not done

My 17-year-old son Daniel was attacked brutally by Chad Levasseur just over a year ago in an incident in Vergennes. My son was left laying in the road unconscious from the beating. He needed eight staples in his head. Police reported that Levasseur was so threatening that no one dared intervene as he kept kicking my son in the back of the head.
On Monday, Oct. 13, Levasseur was sentenced to 30 days in jail and possibly up to three years probation. Thirty days in jail is a huge miscarriage of justice. This couldn’t be any more wrong — I am sick to my stomach. Shame on the state of Vermont and Judge Mello.
