Opinion: Weatherization programs back again this year

As the weather begins to turn colder, homeowners may be thinking about their heating bills for the upcoming winter.
For a limited time only, the $500 bonus from Efficiency Vermont for a completed weatherization project is back. From now until Dec. 15, if you complete a home energy audit with a certified professional, do the work, and achieve at least a 10 percent reduction in air leakage, you will receive an extra $500, in addition to the up to $2,000 you can already receive from Efficiency Vermont.
To learn more about buttoning up your home, go to Efficiency Vermont at efficiencyvermont.org.
If you have already had an audit, this is a great time to schedule the work.
If you are thinking of getting an audit, a good way to go is to call the HEAT Squad at Neighborworks: 438-2303, ext. 227. At this nonprofit organization, the staff will help you schedule an audit with a licensed professional, offer financing, help oversee the project, and more. They are at: http://heatsquad.org.
You can make an investment in your home, save money on energy bills, make your home more comfortable, and lower your carbon footprint, all at the same time.
