MUHS wrestlers fare well in N.Y. tourney

PERU, N.Y. — The Middlebury Union High School wrestling team had what Coach Ethan Raymond called a “very successful” Saturday at a tournament hosted by Peru (N.Y.) High School, winning two weight classes and taking seventh out of 16 teams, the second best showing for a Vermont team competing.
Winning their weight classes were senior Jake Trautwein at 182 pounds and junior Chris Gobbi at 220.
Trautwein improved to 5-0 and defeated Kyle Record of Bellows Falls in the final by a second-period pin in what was a key victory over an instate rival.
Gobbi picked up his first-ever tournament victory and also improved to 5-0; he defeated Cambridge, N.Y., wrestler Nathan Wilch in the final, also with a second-period pin.
Also placing for MUHS were sophomores James Whitley at 132 and Nate Gebo at 106, both taking third and winning their final matches with pins. Whitley improved to 6-1, while Gebo moved to 5-1.
Other Tigers to earn wins were sophomore Cortland Fischer at 160, who went 2-2 in his first varsity tournament; and sophomores Nick Beauchamp at 170 and Kyle Desabrais at 126, who each went 1-2 with victories by pin.
