Locals battle visitors at Field Days armwrestling tournamanet

NEW HAVEN — A handful of Vermonters held their own against residents from five other states on Friday night at the Addison County Fair and Field Days 2013 Armwrestling Tournament.
Vermonters winning at the Aug. 9 competition were George Sheldrick, an event co-organizer who prevailed in both left-and right-handed events; Rob Ketcham, Glen Tupper and Kayla Plouffe.
The tournament drew armwrestlers from New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Maine, as well as Vermont.
In all 116 adults showed up for the 7 p.m. main event, while 85 younger competitors dueled earlier in the youth competition. Both events drew crowds to the fair’s show tent, with many lined up around the outside to watch the action.
Weybridge’s Bill Sinks worked with co-director Sheldrick to make things run smoothly, while Christina Sheldrick and Jennifer Sheldrick set up the brackets.
Organizers gave the Armand Brisson award for Armwrestler of the Year to John Jackson. That award recognizes participation in the local club as well as competitive excellence. Jackson also took second in the heavyweight division of the men’s lefthanded competition last week.
