SOUTH STARKSBORO — For the 11 years Christine Chaloux has lived in her remote South Starksboro home, she’s relied on fuel from three large kerosene tanks to keep her warm through the winter. Restocking on fuel part way through the season just isn’t possible, Chaloux explains, practically or financially speaking.

MIDDLEBURY — Most Addison County students will spend their upcoming winter break week chilling at home and hanging out with friends. But several of their peers will be spending that time doing some heavy lifting for a humanitarian cause a few thousand miles away from the Green Mountain State.

The local high school students later this week will be winging their way to Honduras, where they will help a struggling community that continues to rebuild its infrastructure a dozen years after being devastated by Hurricane Mitch.

Posted on February 11, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — United Way of Addison County (UWAC) officials are organizing an impassioned donation pitch to reinvigorate a 2009-2010 fund-raising campaign that has been sorely tested by the sluggish economy.

UWAC officials knew at the outset of the campaign that raising funds during the current economic climate would pose an extra challenge.
