Area rivers enjoy good health; but RiverWatch group continues vigilance

ADDISON COUNTY — Record rainfall this spring and summer has swelled area waterways but has not swept in appreciably higher levels of bacteria or phosphorous, according to preliminary testing results compiled by the Addison County Riverwatch Collaborative (ACRC).

Couple raises special kite over Vermont

BRIDPORT — One day last week Bridport resident Susan Massed got in touch with her roots by sending a kite high into the sky.

A native of Nantucket, an island of the coast of Massachusetts, Massed took part in a special challenge she had seen on a friend’s Facebook page.

“I saw a promotion put up by the Nantucket Kiteworks,” Massed said. “And I applied to be a part of it.”

Ferrisburgh News: Old Hollow Road traffic and more

FERRISBURGH — Attention all Hollow residents: There will be a public meeting on Tuesday evening, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m. at the Ferrisburgh Town Hall, at which Resource Systems Group will present their traffic study findings and make recommendations for traffic calming on Old Hollow Road. This study is intended to inform as to how to improve the safety and the quality of life in The Hollow. Public comments regarding the presentation will be most welcome. Annual East Middlebury picnic was a time to celebrate

EAST MIDDLEBURY — On a blazing hot day in East Middlebury, 75 residents turned out for the annual Fire District No. 1 community picnic on Sunday, July 14.  Set-up on Saturday evening was accomplished quickly by Eric and Erika Murray, Toby Welch, Jason Larocque, Bob Wells, Peggy Peabody and Dana Flanders.

Mosquito expert – Is the worst yet to come?

ADDISON COUNTY — An unusually wet, hot and humid summer has been miserable for humans but a veritable utopia for mosquitoes, which have been multiplying in vast numbers in many areas of Addison County.

“This is going to be one of the worst (mosquito) years we’ve had in a while,” state Entomologist Alan Graham said on Thursday.

“They have been very abundant, because of the rain.”

Bristol native turns hobby farm into diversified business

BRISTOL — Anne Myrick’s sprawling property off of Route 17 west of Bristol village is covered with intricate gardens, wide fields and a pond.

In recent years, her son Tony Myrick has added to the view. Myrick, 39, has been farming on a few acres near his childhood home and selling what he produces at the Bristol Farmers’ Market for four years. Yore Fare Farm, as he titled the enterprise, is turning a profit this year for the first time.

Middlebury Farmers Market is moving onto drier ground

MIDDLEBURY — While everyone can appreciate the improvements being made near Otter Creek Falls in downtown Middlebury this summer, the construction site and the adjacent Marble Works lawn has had its share of mud and mess like any other construction site during this wildly wet summer.

Still, every Saturday and Wednesday the Middlebury Farmers Market has been open for business, with both vendors and customers alike putting aside any aversions they may have to mud for the sake of good food and company.

Salisbury belltower undergoing repairs

SALISBURY — For folks who live in the town of Salisbury, depending on where they live, there are certain sounds which are part of the auditory landscape — the rush of water, whine of mosquitoes, peepers, birdsong, the coyote chorus, power tools, to name a few. Two others come to mind: the train in the wee hours in West Salisbury and the tolling of the bell from the church in the village.
