City Limits boosts the Commodores

VERGENNES — The Commodore Booster Club saluted local business owner Brett Ward, owner of the City Limits Night Club in Vergennes, on Tuesday night, Jan. 21, at halftime of the Vergennes/Mount Abraham basketball game in Vergennes. The Boosters recognized Ward for his 13 years of support of the Vergennes Union High School Boosters and athletic programs.

In 2013 City Limits contributed $13,000 to the Commodore Booster Club, and since 2001 the business has contributed over $220,000.

Bread Loaf construction project earns green building award

MIDDLEBURY — Bread Loaf Corp. of Middlebury and Hypertherm Inc. of Hanover, N.H., have announced that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded Hypertherm’s Heater Road facility in Lebanon, N.H., with a LEED Gold designation. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and represents the best in class green building practices measuring the design, construction, maintenance and operations of green buildings.

City police poised to relocate into new HQ

VERGENNES — Barring any last-minute setbacks, the Vergennes Police Department should be able to start moving into its new $1.75 million North Main Street headquarters by the end of February, City Manager Mel Hawley told Vergennes aldermen at their Tuesday meeting last week.

On Wednesday, Hawley said construction has remained on schedule, and he is at least cautiously optimistic about a completion date during the month’s final week.

Proposed law looks to jumpstart 'new economy' companies in Vt.

MIDDLEBURY — Rep. Paul Ralston, D-Middlebury, has co-authored legislation he believes will inject new vitality into Vermont’s business sector without spending a lot of new money.

It’s known as H.736 — dubbed “Unlocking Vermont’s Economic Potential” bill — aimed at protecting and growing Vermont’s current industries, while encouraging and rewarding entrepreneurs and innovators in new technology and knowledge-based businesses, according to Ralston.

Former Vergennes depot picked to host Amtrak station

FERRISBURGH — The Vermont Agency of Transportation has designated the former Vergennes rail station, which now sits at the VTrans commuter lot at the junction of Routes 7 and 22A in Ferrisburgh, as a future stop for Amtrak commuter trains, according to Rep. Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes.

Lanpher late last week emphasized Amtrak service in northwestern Vermont, long a goal of state transportation officials, remains several years away, but added, “I can’t tell you how thrilled I am” about the possibility.

'Penguins' take a winter plunge to aid Ripton school

RIPTON — Twenty-one North Branch School students, two teachers, and one NBS alum plunged into a Ripton Pond in the first annual North Branch School Penguin Plunge on Saturday, Jan. 25.

As part of their winter ecology studies, students researched water temperatures of local ponds and learned about hypothermia and the body’s reaction to extreme temperatures. Students have been studying how animals survive the winter so the plunge provided a vivid learning experience.

ANeSU schools set budget proposals, all would see tax hikes

BRISTOL — Proposed elementary school spending for next year is down in three of the five towns that comprise the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union. Nevertheless, all would see small increases in their tax rates, according to numbers supplied by district officials this week.

Bingham seeks fourth three-year term on Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectman Craig Bingham hasn’t shied away from the public spotlight during the past year, whether it be challenging the board’s policy on maintaining executive session material or speaking out against a proposal to build new town offices and a recreation center.

He will soon learn whether his positions have resonated with voters. Bingham is seeking another three-year term on the selectboard in one of the most hotly contested Middlebury elections in years.
