Firehouse drives Bristol budget up

BRISTOL — When Bristol voters consider a proposed town budget at their town meeting next Monday evening, town officials will likely be fielding questions about why general fund spending is going up by more than 20 percent.

Town Administrator Therese Kirby says the reason is pretty straightforward — Bristol’s new firehouse.

Ferrisburgh children's theater to perform March 5

VERGENNES — The Ferrisburgh Children’s Theater cast of 30 students will present “Wagon Wheels a-Rollin’” by Tim Kelly at the Vergennes Union High School auditorium on Saturday, March 5. The performance begins at 7 p.m. Tickets, available at the door, are $6 for adults and $3 for children.

Storytellers offer free course

MIDDLEBURY — The StoryMatters storytelling group in Middlebury will offer a free mini-course in storytelling starting  Tuesday, March 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Ilsley Public Library.

The course will run for four Tuesday evenings in March, and will culminate in a storytelling session for family and friends on an April date to be chosen.

Fanning fetes 40 years teaching with a concert

MIDDLEBURY — Pianist Diana Fanning will celebrate 40 years of teaching piano at Middlebury College with a solo recital in the Robison Hall of the Mahaney Center for the Arts on Sunday, March 6, at 4 p.m.. The program will include beautiful and unusual works by Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, and Janá?ek. The concert will also feature Brahms’ magnificent Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, one of the great masterpieces of the Romantic era.

Students across the country fete FFA

INDIANAPOLIS — Agriculture plays a key role in our daily lives and in a variety of ways. Next week, more than half a million FFA members will celebrate the role agriculture plays in our lives while sharing their message of agriculture and agricultural education throughout the country.

During National FFA Week, a host of activities are planned to raise awareness about the role the National FFA Organization plays in the development of agriculture’s future leaders and the importance of agricultural education.

What is National FFA Week?

Each year, FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. The weeklong tradition began in 1947 when the National FFA Board of Directors designated the week of George Washington’s birthday as National FFA Week in recognition of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. The first National FFA Week was held in 1948. Today, FFA Week always runs Saturday to Saturday and encompasses Feb. 22, Washington’s birthday.

Cole defines Middlebury rail project

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Agency of Transportation Secretary Chris Cole vowed to explore a variety of measures — including winter construction and weekend work stoppages — to make the upcoming replacement of Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges as quick and as painless as possible for local residents and merchants.
