UPDATE: Vergennes police make big heroin bust in Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — Vergennes and Vermont State Police on Monday arrested two Ferrisburgh men and one Cornwall man on a number of drug charges, most notably the sale of heroin.

This was the latest in a string of arrests involving the sale of heroin in Addison County.

GOP to select its nominee to replace the late Rep. Greg Clark

VERGENNES — Addison County Republicans will meet this week to determine who they will nominate to replace Rep. Greg Clark, the Vergennes-area House member who was killed in a traffic incident on Nov. 30.

The Addison, Ferrisburgh and Vergennes Town Republican committees will hold a special meeting on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Otter Creek Room of Bixby Library in Vergennes. They will select up to three persons to recommend to the governor to fill the vacancy in the office of state representative for the Addison-3 district.

Aldermen to finalize city police station plan Jan. 29

VERGENNES — Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley on Wednesday said the city council must make a couple more decisions on their proposal for a new police station before it is ready for a Town Meeting Day vote.

Aldermen plan to meet on Jan. 29 to make final a bond amount and prepare a warning for residents’ approval in March, Hawley said, with it almost certainly intended to finance a 5,940-square-foot, 24-room station on the former North Main Street home of Vergennes Auto Sales.

Shelter, landlords work together to help homeless

VERGENNES — It was only a couple of months ago that Dave Huntley was jobless, homeless and living out of his car.

“I’d been working on a farm in Barton,” Huntley said during a recent interview at the John W. Graham Emergency Shelter in Vergennes, where he eventually landed. “There weren’t too many farm jobs out there.”

But thanks to the efforts of the shelter, other area nonprofits and a Vergennes landlord, Huntley is a now a rent-paying tenant at a local residence.

Kennedy Brothers Marketplace sold in family deal

VERGENNES — The Kennedy Brothers business, including the landmark 11 North Main St. building in Vergennes, changed hands in a late-December family deal that will allow its long-time principal owner to retire.

The transaction also means the 41,724-square-foot Kennedy Brothers Marketplace building will no longer be for sale for $1.2 million, as it has been in recent years; its new owners have taken it off the market and will continue to look for tenants.

In Vergennes, Kennedy Brothers sale is off

VERGENNES — A potential sale of Kennedy Brothers in Vergennes has fallen through, but the principals in the deal still hope for a lease arrangement that would establish a grocery store on the North Main Street landmark’s ground floor.

Vergennes resident Neil Swenor, a former longtime worker at Greg’s Meat Market in Middlebury, had hoped to buy the Kennedy Brothers property, which includes 4 acres and an almost 42,000-square-foot building.

City entrepreneurs build a better grocery bag

VERGENNES — It can hold up to 30 pounds of groceries or, say, picnic food and beverages; can be carried as a bag, over-the-shoulder tote or backpack; it’s washable; and, as the slogan that describes it states, it “stands tall and folds small.”

Vergennes Police Log: Resident cited for supplying drugs to a juvenile

VERGENNES — Vergennes police recently cited two city residents for supplying drugs and alcohol to a juvenile Vergennes resident following an investigation that began on Nov. 29, when the juvenile’s mother complained to police that he had come home under the influence of substances.

Police said their investigation led to a Dec. 3 citation to Carol Englehardt, 46, of Vergennes for allegedly delivering a drug to a minor. Police allege the drug in question was Klonopin, an anti-seizure medication, and that the juvenile had snorted it in powder form.

Cornwall man charged in sexual assault on a child

VERGENNES — Vergennes police last Tuesday arrested a Cornwall man at his home and charged him with aggravated sexual assault on a child younger than 10 years old in connection with an incident at a Vergennes business earlier that day.

Michael S. Wedge, 29, was lodged at the Chittenden County Correctional Facility that night for lack of $25,000 bail. The next day he pleaded not guilty in Addison Superior Court, Criminal Division, and was jailed without bail. Wedge could face a sentence of 10 years to life in prison and a fine up to $50,000 if found guilty.

Vergennes shopkeeper ventures into some familiar territory

VERGENNES — In October 1982, Linda Cook, then 20, went to work as a retail clerk for Fishman’s Department Store owner David Coen at the corner of Main and Green streets, right in the center of Vergennes.

Since then, Cook’s career has never left the heart of downtown, although she did switch sides of the road: She worked from 1997 to 2005 at Classic Stitching, on the other side of Green Street, after Coen closed Fishman’s in 1997.
