STARKSBORO — The traditional contra dance call of “grab your partner by the hand” has taken on a whole new meaning in light of the orphans affected by the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti. Local activists who have seen firsthand the plight of the Port-au-Prince orphanage Men Nan Men (Creole for Hand in Hand) have organized a barn dance in Starksboro this Saturday to raise funds to support these children in need.

STARKSBORO — School and town officials in Starksboro are hurriedly considering a plan to install a 150-kilowatt solar array in the town before the expiration of generous state and federal tax credits that would defray the cost of the project.

STARKSBORO — Starksboro resident Katy Blue jokes that her plan to cycle across the country this summer is a “turning 40” thing.

But for Blue, who is, yes, 40, the ambitious adventure to ride alone from Vermont to Seattle is more than a mid-life whim: The cross-country trek makes good on Blue’s long-time dream to see the country, and serves as a tribute to Blue’s father, Bob Blue, who died in 2006 after a 20-year battle with multiple sclerosis, or MS.

After her father’s death, Blue found herself devastated — and angry.

Restocking on fuel part way through the season just isn’t possible, Chaloux explains, practically or financially speaking.

STARKSBORO — A political consultant would advise most new candidates to start off aspiring to a lower rung on the electoral ladder than lieutenant governor.

But when the candidate’s last name is Snelling, one can throw conventional political wisdom out the window. The son of the late Vermont Gov. Richard Snelling and former Lt. Gov. Barbara Snelling, Republican Mark Snelling confirmed on Tuesday his plans to seek the state’s second-highest executive post in the November 2010 elections.
