Middlebury firefighters move into refurbished quarters

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury firefighter Donald Patterson started taking pictures of the fire department’s Seymour Street headquarters last April when construction crews began the multi-million-dollar process of renovating and expanding it.

Eleven months, a lot of hard work and more than 1,000 Patterson photographs later, the Seymour Street fire station is substantially complete and now occupied by a grateful Middlebury Fire Department.

Downtown Middlebury disruptions expected from rail bridge work

MIDDLEBURY — Downtown Middlebury businesses and property owners on Thursday, March 28, will have a chance to air their concerns about the loss of parking, construction noise and traffic detours that will arise during the upcoming replacement of the railroad overpasses on Main Street and Merchants Row.

MUMS spelling champ repeats feat

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union Middle School eighth-grader Ronan Howlett has an expansive vocabulary for a 14-year-old, but two words in particular will always resonate with him even if he rarely gets an opportunity to use them in a sentence: “Qualitative” and “desultory.”

Those are the two words that have won him consecutive titles as Vermont’s top student speller.

Middlebury student exhibits photo study of trash cans

MIDDLEBURY — It’s the rare individual that takes real notice of trash receptacles.

But after spending two years making 1,300 photographs of a dizzying variety of garbage containers, Middlebury College student Ryan Kim has developed a bona fide visual study of those objects — and found that the duality of practical function and aesthetic form in them makes them very interesting indeed.

Tinkerer takes hobby to a new level with electronics fix-it shop

MIDDLEBURY — As a child, Joshua Chamberlain loved to take mechanical things apart and put them back together again. He wanted to see what made them tick and make sure they kept ticking when he had reassembled them.

Now 41, Chamberlain is still taking stuff apart — only he is now getting paid for it. He has just opened The Laptop Shop on Middlebury’s Merchants Row, where he works out bugs in computers and a variety of other electronics for customers who might otherwise have to make the trek to Rutland or Chittenden counties.
