Middlebury Police Log: Police help find missing elderly man

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police — with assistance from two other law enforcement agencies and the Middlebury Fire Department — found a 91-year-old man who had gone missing from the East Main Street area on Sunday, Oct. 14.

Police said the man had gone for a walk early that afternoon and had not returned to take his customary dose of medication, according to police.

HOPE renews call for food shelf donations

MIDDLEBURY — Officials at the organization Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects, or HOPE, are renewing their call for food shelf donations that will be critical in feeding Addison County’s low-income residents until locally organized food drives replenish the cupboards later this fall.

Jeanne Montross, executive director of HOPE, first made the pitch in August — a time when food reserves are typically low. Unfortunately, that appeal didn’t resonate as well as Montross had hoped.

Middlebury native hiked Long Trail like it was 1917 — in wool knickers

Mike DeBonis’s curiosity got the best of him last summer, when he decided to spend two weeks of his vacation hiking the Long Trail in 1917 style. You know, wearing wool knickers, carrying a pack basket, sleeping under a twine-supported tarp and eating cold, canned fish for breakfast.

Why, you ask? Good question.

Our elliptical machine talks to me all the time.

It just doesn’t sit in the corner of the family room while I do my best to ignore it.

“I’m here,” the elliptical tells me. “I’m waiting. It’s only a matter of time. You’ll see. It will be you and me and tai chi.”

I try not to listen. I turn up the TV and dream about being 24 years old, when as a left back no wing could beat me down the right side of the soccer pitch.

Towns and college call for Rt. 125 safety, ask for ledge removal at crash site

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury has joined Bridport, Cornwall and Middlebury College in urging the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) to “immediately” make major safety improvements to a notorious stretch of Route 125 near Cider Mill Road where a Shoreham man was killed following a collision with a fire truck on Sept. 9.

Sheriff Keeler ready to step down after an eventful 46-year career

MIDDLEBURY — At age 76, Addison County Sheriff Don Keeler might not move around as well as he used to. But he still puts in a work day that could put a lot of nine-to-fivers to shame.

By day, he manages a workforce of 20 full- and part-time deputies, dispatchers and support staff.

By night, he can often be seen serving writs and other court paperwork to homes and businesses throughout the county.
