Middlebury festival gives diverse filmmakers chances to reach new people

Documentary filmmaker Thomas Bena had just finished writing an email to Dick Lehr, the former Boston Globe investigative reporter, when I recognized him in Carol’s Hungry Mind Café on Saturday afternoon. I remembered him from that day’s earlier screening of “Nashville.” I quickly did some research on my phone and, as a rookie reporter and aspiring filmmaker, and engaged him in a conversation.

Motorcycle crashes into dump truck in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are investigating a motorcycle-versus-truck accident on Case Street on the evening of Monday, Aug. 28, that resulted in serious injuries to a man and woman who were riding the motorcycle.

Middlebury police Chief Tom Hanley said the crash occurred when a northbound motorcycle struck a northbound dump truck that was turning into a driveway at 4961 Case St., which is about halfway between Cobble Road and Mead Lane.

Bridge School adding new programs, teachers for 2017-2018

MIDDLEBURY — Bridge School, an independent elementary school in Middlebury, is starting the school year with some new employees and programs that, school officials said, expand its dedication to creativity and the arts, outdoor education, and innovative, student-driven learning.

This year, community collaboration is a unifying focus throughout Bridge’s programs; the school said it will get students out in the community, and open its doors to provide space for the entire Addison County community to gather, play and learn.

Middlebury Police Log: Investigation launched into cruelty to child

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police launched an investigation on Aug. 22 into a possible case of cruelty to a child, stemming from information police they received from Porter Medical Center officials.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a report of a family fight near the intersection of Route 116 and Mead Lane on Aug. 21. Police said two brothers had been fighting.

•  Quieted a loud party at a Valley View Drive residence on Aug. 21.

Watch out, drivers: Line painting on Middlebury streets Wednesday and Thursday nights

MIDDLEBURY — The streets of Middlebury will be hopping with activity for a couple nights this week. No, the college students are not back early, its just that the Middlebury Highway Department will be re-paining lines on some of the streets overnight.

Motorists should be aware that the road crew will be doing pavement line striping in the downtown area from 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, to 5 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, and then again from 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, to 5 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 1.

Vermont Gas pipeline easements spur petition

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury resident is petitioning for a special town meeting he hopes will lead to Vermont Gas having to pay for the three easements it is seeking on town property to advance its natural gas pipeline, as opposed to receiving those easements for free.

Middlebury selectboard seeks input on marijuana

MIDDLEBURY — The state Legislature this winter is likely to again debate the question of whether to legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, and the Middlebury selectboard wants to know how local residents feel about that issue.

To that end, the selectboard has prepared a survey — available on-line and through the town offices — on the issue of marijuana legalization.

Solar farm creates quite the buzz: Pollinators flock to colorful crop

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Mike Kiernan has been as busy as a bee these days. By night, he’s healing his fellow man in 12-hour shifts as a physician with Porter Hospital’s Emergency Department.

But by day, Kiernan dons a t-shirt and gloves and heads out to a solar farm where he lovingly nurtures a variety of flowers and forage aimed at attracting and feeding bees, hummingbirds and a wide variety of nature’s dwindling number of pollinators.

Record number of films and fans flock to Middlebury film festival

MIDDLEBURY — “I think this is the best audience we’ve ever had!” said Joan Kron after the screening of her film “Take My Nose… Please,” a documentary about plastic surgery and comedy. The 89-year-old, first-time filmmaker’s work sparked non-stop applause and laughter in the crowd, who gathered in the Town Hall Theater on Aug. 24 for the Opening Night of this year’s Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival.

Middlebury demos pop-up bike-pedestrian projects; seeks community feedback

MIDDLEBURY — In addition to the temporary bridges in downtown Middlebury, Middlebury residents are also being exposed to a few pilot bicycle-pedestrian projects in the downtown.

The Middlebury Bike-Ped Technical Assistance working group, in partnership with the bike-ped advocacy group Local Motion, set up a two-week pop-up project designed to test traffic calming strategies. The goal is to determine what strategies work to make downtown areas more bike-pedestrian friendly.
