MIDDLEBURY — We all know It’s a Wonderful Life, the 1940s Christmas film. Some of us look forward to it every year, others, well, been-there-done-that, right? Wrong. This weekend the Middlebury Actors Workshop brings It’s a Wonderful Life to the Town Hall Theater’s stage and it doesn’t look anything like the classic you saw on TV.

Single budget presented for all schools in Middlebury area

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District board on Monday began sailing into uncharted waters, launching what will be a month-long effort to devise a first-ever, global spending plan for the district’s nine schools for fiscal year 2018.

ACSD officials got a glimpse of their starting point: An estimate of $35,769,346 in spending to cover the combined needs of Middlebury Union middle and high schools, along with the elementary schools in Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge.

Critics of Middlebury rail project table lawsuit plans

MIDDLEBURY — Opponents of a $40 million plan to replace Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges on Tuesday withdrew their threat of a lawsuit to delay the project after they were informed by state officials that preliminary work to remove trees from the future construction area would be postponed until next month, at the earliest.

County sheriff reimburses department for political ad

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Sheriff Don Keeler took a step to put to rest questions about how he used sheriff’s department funds to support a candidate in the recent election.

Last Thursday, the Addison Independent reported that Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos and State Auditor Doug Hoffer had criticized Keeler for using some of his department’s funds during the Nov. 8 election to back his preferred candidate for high bailiff.

Porter staff participates in disaster training

MIDDLEBURY — During the week of Nov. 14, healthcare professionals from across Vermont, including 12 staff members from Porter Medical Center, will be traveling to a national emergency preparedness training facility in Anniston, Ala. under a federally-funded program to train at the “Center for Domestic Preparedness” (CDP).

John Kellner named a new England 'Super Lawyer'

BURLINGTON / MIDDLEBURY — John L. Kellner of Langrock Sperry & Wool LLP has been named, along with five other Langrock attorneys, to the New England “Super Lawyers” list, among the top attorneys in Vermont for 2016. 

No more than 5 percent of the lawyers in the entire state are selected by “Super Lawyers.” Kellner is recognized for his practice in the area of Personal Injuries/Plaintiffs. He lives in Weybridge, and has served as president of the Vermont Trial Lawyers Association and the Addison County Bar Association.

Middlebury seeks to contain increases in municipal budget

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard last week looked at the first draft of a proposed 2017-2018 town budget that would require $7,323,684 to be raised in local property taxes, which would in turn require a 4.2-cent hike in the current municipal tax rate of 97.8 cents per $100 in assessed value.

Middlebury Town Manager Kathleen Ramsay has estimated the budget — as currently constituted — would represent a $268,000 increase in total spending, but would require raising an additional $373,526 from property taxes.
